Simple Training: A Journey to Health and Simplicity

Returning to the Origin of Fitness in Shanghai's Xin Tian Di

Inspired by the pursuit of health and well-being, Carlie Ling and K.D Hsu have created Simple Training, a gym that embodies purity, simplicity, and professionalism. Located in the prime location of Xin Tian Di in Shanghai, this fitness center offers a stress-free environment for exercise and promotes a holistic approach to health.

Unlike contemporary gyms that resemble nightclubs, Simple Training takes a different approach. The designers aimed to bring fitness back to its roots, focusing on the essence of exercise rather than creating a social atmosphere. The result is a space that fosters a sense of simplicity and camaraderie, where like-minded individuals can come together to pursue their fitness goals.

The interior design of Simple Training is characterized by soft sunlight, natural materials, and a minimalist aesthetic. The use of white walls and timber work creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, while large windows allow ample natural light to flood the space. Specialty flooring materials were chosen for the weight-training area to withstand heavy impact and minimize noise.

The layout of Simple Training was carefully planned to optimize circulation and energy flow. A square layout was chosen to promote movement of air and Chi energy, with functional areas strategically placed around the main spaces. Storage was consolidated vertically to minimize odd corners and create streamlined circulation paths. The entrance features a timber grille, serving as both a demarcation and a guide for circulation.

In addition to traditional exercise equipment, Simple Training also offers yoga courses. The designers reserved plenty of space to accommodate these programs, ensuring that the needs of all fitness enthusiasts are met. The bathrooms feature a blank color layout, combining privacy and a modern aesthetic, while natural materials throughout the space evoke a sense of tranquility and well-being.

Simple Training was completed in Shanghai in February 2018. The design process was guided by extensive research into the needs and desires of gym-goers. The goal was to create a space that not only facilitates physical transformation but also provides a sense of community and attention. Soft lighting and bright natural light were incorporated to enhance the gym experience and encourage members to capture their progress with great selfies.

Despite budget and scheduling constraints, the designers of Simple Training approached the project with a problem-solving mindset. They understood that design is not just about aesthetics, but also about creating value for clients. By listening intently to the needs of the clients, they were able to overcome challenges and deliver a space that embodies the principles of health, simplicity, and balance.

Simple Training has been recognized for its outstanding design, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. Simple Training is a testament to the power of design to create spaces that promote well-being and make the world a better place.
